KGU 760 The Voice of Hawaii AM Honolulu
The Voice of Hawaii -with a signal strength of 10,000 Watts, KGU AM is owned by Salem Media of Hawaii, Inc., a subsidiary of Salem Communications. “The first successful radio broadcasting concert to be given by any newspaper in Hawaii was broadcast from the powerful radio station on the roof of the Advertiser building between 7:30 and 9 o’clock last night.” That line from the Honolulu Advertiser announced the beginning of radio broadcasting in Hawaii on the evening of Friday, May 11, 1922 over KGU, the oldest radio station in the islands. That first program began with a rendition of “Ave Maria” from renowned violinist Kathleen Parlow and started a radio tradition. For 80 years since, KGU has been a mainstay of radio in Hawaii and the home of some of the biggest names in local broadcasting. Purchased by Salem Communications of Camarillo, CA in 1999, KGU began the next chapter of its storied history. Jack Waters, Program Director of KGU, says, “Our main goal is reflected in the brief phrase – ‘building your faith and family.’ Through all our programs and music on KGU we want each listener to know how much the God of heaven cares for them personally, and how faith in that living God can make all the difference both now and for eternity.” Today, KGU continues to strengthen the Christian community with local and national programs such as Focus on the Family with Dr. James Dobson, Living Way with Jack Hayford, and Family Life Today with Dennis Rainey. Certain hours of the day and on weekends we also play some of the best in today’s Praise & Worship music from the Salem Music Network. We hope that as you listen you’ll be drawn closer to the Lord Jesus, encouraged daily to follow His example of faith and find yourself better prepared to meet Him at His return.
