| WHCF Where He Comes First 88.5 FM Bangor |
| WHCF began as an outreach ministry of Bangor Baptist Church. The station went on the air in 1981 after many years of prayer, sacrifice and work by members of the church. The original tower was on Black Cap Mountain with 11,000 watts of power reaching Central Maine. In 1984 WHCF received permission from the Federal Communication Commission to up the power to 100,000 watts off Passadumkeag Mountain making it one of the largest radio stations in Maine. WHCF is a full-time (24 hr. per day) Christian radio station intended to edify the saints and reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to keep people informed. The station's format is 50% music and 50% programs. Many of the programs are designed to help families in the areas of finance, the upbringing of their children, and keeping the family unit together and happy. The station relies on business sponsors, programmers, and listener support to carry the financial aspect of the ministry. Eighty percent of the station's support comes from an annual Share-a-Thon. The budget has grown from a mere $150,000 in 1985 to over $500,000 today. WHCF has state of the art equipment at its studio in Bangor as well as a new 600' tower on top of Passadumkeag Mountain. The appraised value of FM 88 was $1,000,000 in 1988. Its outreach now ranges from Central and Northern Maine to parts of the Canadian Maritimes. WHCF also rents space to the Maine State Police, Maine Forestry, Maine Emergency management and Bangor Hydro. |
